This past weekend my gaming group had the chance to play out the 13th Australian Brigade's attack into the southern outskirts of Villers-Bretonneux. This was a "No Retreat" mission with WW1 Strategic Reserves Added. In this battle Charles would run the defending Germans and Ed would run the attack British. One really nice aspect of this game was that Charles brought over his Cigar Box Games printed table cover.

The table is looking good with Charles' new game mat!

Ed borrowed my British force to play this battle.

Charles' defending Germans.

Charles traded in most of his HMGs for HMG nests.

The forces deployed!

The British "main effort" on the right.

The British immediately start to reduce the HMG nest on turn 1.

Image
On the German right a flamethrower is sent forward as a forlorn hope!

Image
Initial British assaults go in on the right. The Krupp 7.7cm is having no effect against the German tanks!

Image
My Golden Retriever puppy, Sadie, cheers on the Germans.

Image
The British seize a larger crater. Always "Key Terrain" in our WW1 games it seems!

Image
Wargaming is hard work! Sadie is tuckerd out!

Image
The Mark IV goes in on the assault.

Image
The Germans counter attack the beast, but even with an ATR they cannot stop it!

Image
The Germans can't seem to stop the tanks, they do a great job thinning out the British infantry support and the right flank seem very sparse now for the British.

Image
The Mark IV knocks out the Krupp 7.7cm detachment. The Germans hope on their left begin to diminish rapidly.

Image
Even without supporting infantry, the veteran British tanks have their way with the trained German defenders.

Image
The Mark IV just seems impervious to EVERYTHING the Charles can throw at it!

The British Armour Corps clears the last of the Germans from the Southeast area of Villers-Bretonneux and secure the zone for the British with a 5-2 win.

I tough game. The more numerous but trained German infantry just could not stand up the veteran British forces. The three vet Stokes mortars and British Rifle Grenades made short work of he German HMG nests and Anti-tank assets. This allowed every British tank to survive, unlike when I commanded them in B1 and lost EVRY one of them.

This was a key battle, but fortunately the battles sequence allowed the Germans retreating from this battle to slip out before the British totally cut of the German salient in their victory at C4.
