Lone Star is once again at Area 51 in Grapevine, Texas.

We used the BF Great War Pincer mission.

British (CV) forces have two rifle platoons, a four-gun HMG platoon, a Mk IV male, and a Whippet. Firestorm forces add a CT rifle platoon and a CV rifle platoon.

The Germans bring two Firestorm CV rifle platoons, to which they add two more CV rifle platoons (both reduced-size), three HMG nests, two FK96 guns, and one A7V.

Our board represents Monument Woods, by now a thoroughly blasted piece of earth, heavily cratered with only skeletons of what was once a verdant place.

Deploying fortifications first, the German player places the three HMG nests along the front line and the two FK96 guns in gun pits in the center rear. The objectives are then placed, with the German objective placed in the center between the two guns. The British objective is on the far left German flank, far forward.

The Germans place the two reduced-size rifle platoons in reserve, along with the A7V. One platoon is placed on the British objective in a straight line towards the center. The second German rifle platoon is placed to refuse the right flank, in a L-shaped deployment toward the rear objective.

The British place a single rifle platoon on their right flank, ready to move toward the forward objective.

The British left is heavily weighted, with three rifle platoons, the HMG platoon and the two tanks.

Seeing the green horde, the Germans know this will be a long day.

After a turn to move into position, on the second turn the British get straight to work assaulting the German right. The HMG nests have a harder time hitting due to all the cover on the board.

The infantry go in first and, with hitting on two's for most of their teams, easily push back the thinly spread Germans. Another assault and one of the HMG nests is taken out.

The Whippet makes its assault, also a success. The Germans fall back but are also able to take advantage of the ample cover available.

A FK96 gets a hit on the Whippet and destroys it. With reserves coming on soon, the Germans have a glimmer of hope.

The British continue their success the next turn, assaulting to contest the rear objective. The German rifle platoon passes a platoon morale check. The Germans are barely hanging on.

The assault presses on, with the British taking out one of the FK96s.

A bit of luck on German turn 3, with the A7V arriving from reserves. Having failed an assault on the forward objective, the British retreated into cover but are not dug in. The A7V and rifle fire press the single British rifle platoon, eventually forcing it to retire from the battlefield.

A shot from the Mk IV takes out the other FK96, and the Germans must take a company morale check. They pass.

Having dispatched the threat to the forward objective, the A7V lumbers forward. The two tanks trade shots, inconclusively. MGs from the tank fail to kill any teams from the furthest forward British platoon contesting the rear objective.

The Germans must get another platoon on the board to avoid further company morale checks. No Germans reserves arrive on Turn 4. Turn 5, another passed German company morale check. A reduced-size rifle platoon arrives and double-times to the rear objective, halfway across the board. The next turn they advance again, then move 4' more on a Infanterie Vor! roll.

Meanwhile the A7V also moves to contest the objective. The British platoon is close to breaking, having passed two morale checks. Time to assault. The CT tank misses. No problem. The British make their tank terror test to counterattack.

The German tank commander isn't worried. They're only TA2 and his tank is top armor 1. The British get three hits. The German tank commander begins to worry. Saves are rolled: a 3 and two 1s!

Drat! Two hits on the tank and it's now a sitting duck. On the next turn the Mk IV moves into range, able to fire both guns at full ROF, as the A7V is not moving.

Up it goes! And with it goes any hope the Germans have of salvaging a victory. 4-3 British.

British Aussies hold Monument Woods! Congratulations to Ken R., a very experienced FOW player who played (and won) his first Great War game today!

Great AAR of a great game. Really like how you tried to make the board match the period photo!

What did you use for that brown ground mat?

Thanks, Tom.

We used a F.A.T. mat called "Barren Wasteland." For the open field games, we used another F.A.T. mat, "Grassy Plains." The company also has a WWI-suitable mat called "Blast Zone" but I felt the craters were slightly out of scale and the color was a little off. Besides, the Barren Wasteland mat is also quite good for desert games. We used it for an AIW game last weekend.

Thanks Mark, when is the next game? I'd like to swing by. My armies are gathering dust and I know I'll be all in on the new release later this year.

Depending on when the next turn's battles are set, we'll probably have a game during this week, John.
