It was a long day on the battlefield, let's pause for a literary interlude, shall we?

Highly recommended read, full of tactics and details of weapons and other equipment for gearheads like me. Also available on Kindle. (I'm not on commission, but feel free to send me money.)

Trench: A History of Trench Warfare on the Western Front by Stephen Bull.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled warfare.

South of town, another Hun push is in the works.

On the move, the German Infanteriekompanie has two Infanterie platoons, a Minenwerfer platoon, and an A7V. Another A7V arrives from strategic reserve (FS) and a 125-pt credit for a FS Infanterie platoon was used towards a Stoss platoon.

Defending this portion of the line, the British have a HQ with a sniper (oops! I forgot to deploy him!), two CV rifle platoons, a two-gun HMG platoon (exchanged for two nests), a single Stokes mortar, a reduced-size rifle platoon, and a RA Detachment (two guns, not three as shown). In support are several Firestorm tanks: one Mk IV male and two Whippets.

Both objectives are placed relatively close together, near a patch of shattered woods towards the forward side of the objective placement area.

The British deploy their RA detachment in gun pits in the far corner of their deployment area.
Two nests are placed by the trenches, both on the side nearest the objectives. With the reduced-size infantry platoon, Stokes mortar, and all the tanks in reserve, the British are able to deploy two rifle platoons, one on the left flank in the trenches, and the other ready to sprint for the objectives.

The Germans deploy an Infanterie platoon and the Minenwerfer platoon on the flank, with the other Infanterie platoon and both A7Vs in front of the British platoons and the Stoss platoon on the other end of the trenches.

British have the first turn. Luck! Reserves in the form of a Mk. IV arrive, and in place to get the first shot on the A7Vs. Each main gun hits an A7V but there is no penetration. The British tank commander braces himself for return fire. Meanwhile, on infantry platoon heads for the objectives and the other fails to kill any of the German infantry to its front.

German turn. As their infantry advances, on the flanks, the two A7Vs fire on the lone Mk. IV. One hit. First FP passed. Now for the second FP roll. Passed! The Mk. IV bursts into flames and the British infantry nearby swallow hard. It's going to be a long day.

The tank MGs are turned on the infantry in the trenches, pinning them. The German Infanterie assault but are pushed back. Both tanks also assault, in turn. The British are thrown out of their trenches after they fail all their counter-attack rolls and re-rolls.

Turns pass, I forget to take pictures. British reserves arrive and move into position. One Whippet takes out a Minenwerfer but is destroyed the next turn by the remaining Minenwerfer. That Minenwerfer also takes out one of the 18 pdrs., and the German tanks take out the other. The Stokes mortar fires and fires but never hits anything.

German infantry is advancing from the near flank and, more slowly, from the far flank. The German OIC, showing his troops what kind of Mensch he truly is, takes out a HMG nest WITH HIS PISTOL.

The British dig in one rifle platoon covering both objectives in the shattered woods while the other rifle platoon slowly falls back to join them, losing stands on the way.

The German tanks, unsupported, assault, in turn, the British infantry on the objectives. Back and forth. Both tanks are destroyed! But it's a textbook Pyrrhic victory as the British infantry is bled white, barely passing successive platoon morale checks.

I forget to take more pictures--you'll just have to take my word for it. The reduced-size British rifle platoon moves up to support, but at only five stands, is also soon at below half strength. The remaining Whippet moves up to help cover the objectives, but with the remaining Infanterie platoon and a fresh Stoss platoon arriving, and the British company on the verge of breaking, the handwriting is on the wall.

Germans win: 4-3.

Thanks to Allen at Texas Toy Soldier for letting us hog a table ALL day!
