Here is the news for June 4th. Allied troops in Italy have succeeded in breaching Axis lines both in the Liri Valley and at the Anzio beach-head. In both areas, local commanders report that there have been significant gains made.

Since the initial landings at Anzio, Allied forces have been engaged in a ferocious struggle against Axis units attempting to crush the beach-head. However, the use of naval gunfire backed up by Allied air power has meant that Allied forces have managed to halt the enemy and also break through the ring of units surrounding the beach-head. Reports from the area indicate Allied units are now beginning a drive towards the outskirts of Rome itself.

In the Liri Valley, the Axis defences of the Hitler Line have been decisively broken and reports indicate reserves are now pushing north against broken resistance. Fighting is described as having been “extremely heavy”, with fortified positions often proving difficult or impossible to seize without extensive aerial and artillery support.

On the coast, the town of Terracina has been liberated by Commonwealth and French forces after heavy fighting. Axis forces have withdrawn north into the marshes and are said to be resisting Allied efforts to create a linkup with the Anzio beach-head. Due to the capture of the town, Axis forces further east are now isolated in part of the Hitler line and according to one local commander “can be left to wither on the vine.”

Due to recent Allied advances, commanders remain confident that the liberation of Rome may be imminent. Allied air and naval power is described as playing an important part in the advance, isolating and devastating Axis positions. Troops are reported to be confident of their success, their morale buoyed by their recent successes.
