Here is the news for May 26th. Allied troops in Italy have continued a slow push north towards the city of Rome In addition, forces carried out a landing on the coast at Anzio.

Three days ago, Allied forces backed by heavy naval gunfire support landed at the coastal town of Anzio, close to Rome and behind the Axis defences to the south. Advanced units are reported to be pushing forward in an attempt to threaten Axis supply lines to the main front. It is hoped that this landing will facilitate a breakout from the main Allied positions further south.

There has been heavy fighting in the Liri Valley as Allied troops attempt to break through the Hitler Line. Axis infantry, using fortified positions, have proved difficult to move. In addition, counterattacks from panzer units have also delayed the advance north. Commanders on the scene concede that the advance has been “less than hoped or planned for”, but remain confident that Allied numerical and logistical superiority will eventually triumph.

On the coast, Gatea has been liberated and operations are now under way to seize the town of Terracina. Fighting is reported to be continuing in the hills outside the town. Local commanders have stated that taking the town will outflank the Hitler line and cut off Axis forces further east.

Allied commanders are reported to be pleased with the way units have been performing in the advance, but acknowledge that Axis forces have proved to be adept at using the natural advantages the terrain provides for defence. However, despite the occasional Axis success, ultimate victory and the liberation of Italy will be achieved.
