Here is die news for May 23rd. Our forces in Italy have continued their determined resistance against heavy assaults from the invaders. Our troops are making the Allies pay heavily for each metre of ground they capture, inflicting disproportionate losses. Daring counterattacks from our panzers also cause casualties among reckless Allied units. The desperate invaders have been forced to attempt a naval landing at Anzio in a surely-vain attempt to break our defence.

The defence of Monte Cassino has delayed any attempt by the invaders to move closer to Rome. Once our forces further east had completed their redeployment, the remaining parachute troops, backed by panzers, launched a daring breakout attempt. After heavy fighting, the survivors succeeded in reaching our main lines in the Liri Valley. Major Alwin Steinhauser has been awarded an Iron Cross 1st Class for his outstanding leadership of the breakout.

In the Liri Valley, our troops have totally stalled Allied progress. Fighting from fortified positions, the brave defenders have seen off numerous assaults. Despite their best efforts, the Allies have been unable to make any sort of meaningful advance.
Terracina has seen only limited fighting, with our troops holding back Allied probing attacks. Counterattacks have continued to prevent any substantial build-up of pressure, enabling our forces to continue to prepare their defences.

In a clear sign of their desperation, the Allied forces have launched an invasion at Anzio. Commanders in the field report that the initial landing has been promptly sealed off, and that reserves are quickly moving into position to destroy the beach-head.

Army Group C issued a communique stating that all troops remained certain of final victory. Commanders are confident the Allied advance will soon stall. A combination of resolute defence, expert fortifications and superior weaponry will force the Allies to pay too high a price for victory.
