Team Yankee
Spearhead - p. 71 spearhead move may not take the team “within 16” of an enemy team it is not concealed from “ and deploying remaining units within 8” again “within 16” of an enemy team it is not concealed from “ and last para ‘treat the enemy deployment area and all objectives outside your deployment area as enemy teams….”
Also note that terrain (p.41) LOS thru short and tall terrain conceals teams since no deploying team is going to be able to be within 2”.
So in the case of free for all, encounter, and hasty attack, this only extends the deployment area by 8” in the first two and 4” in the last case. No retreat the front lines are 16” apart. The other two maps equally restrictive. So how is this so OP ?

Shooting ‘over’ or “through”
P, 40 NO LINE OF SIGHT - LOS is blocked by ‘friendly teams other than stationary inf teams. Pretty clear. No exceptions listed.

So do teams that are elevated say on a hill or 2nd floor of a building where WSYWIG shows an actual line of sight over a friendly team ?

Do not forget people play on tables bigger then 6x4 and some people have very heavy terrain that blocks a lot of LOS.

But basically, spearhead is a nice bonus if you can use it, but I doubt you should ever base a strategy on spearhead. The West Germans can probable take advantage of spearhead more then the Russians or Brits can due to the speed. They have a road speed of 40" so if the winding road is set up right, they can follow it.

As for your measurements, you appear to be assuming that the opponent has a constant line across his front before you set down your spearhead platoon. Usually people have that as their 1st platoon so it is pretty easy to cross deeper into the opponents space.

As for LOS when one team is elevated, have you read page 42? It leads you to assume that there is an exception when there is a height difference.

Actually we play on a 5x5 which further distorts the geometry. But I kept reading about BMP horde plus spearhead AAR where people were saying they were on the objective first turn.

I read p 42 and that seems to bolster the WYSIWYG argument.

thanks

"Actually we play on a 5x5 which ..." Would you be playing in NoVa around Belle View? I know a gamestore in that area that has 5x5 tables. This last weekend they had a setup shaped like a "Z". With 5 tables. you had 5x10 on each end with the middle resulting in a 5x15 playing field. Played a TY scenario of a pincer, NATO in the middle with Soviet/Polish trying to link up.
