This is truly excellent and easily the most inspired supplement for Bolt Action yet (I include here all the paid for ones and I do not exaggerate). The core is as good as any BA army list but it's the addition of the mini-campaign that is great.

Personally I'd have rated the units as Regular Fanatics at best (no Veterans), all the heavy weapons and vehicles as Inexperienced, and thrown in more Green and Inexperienced with Fanatic and/or Tough Fighter upgrades. I think I'd have had the Shirkers as Fanatics too (they don't like being shot at one bit, but are devils up close . . .). But that's just personal taste really.

Fantastic stuff.

Great supplement! Could anyone create a Bolt Action's supplement for the Spanish Civil War?

Excellent!

Have not had a chance to read the whole thing as of yet but I like what I read. My main question, for Ethiopia, is do the Italians play the same way as in Bolt Action? Not sure the Avanti rule or the Defender rules make as much sense. I'd be tempted to play this using the Italians special rules from the get you by supplement. I think the "Always able to shoot attackers" rule fits more the Colonial flavor of this campaign.

Just my two cents.

Oh, and again, Great job Sir!

David

Ooh, very cool! 8-)

Some questions/typos while I read it through...

Cost of the Red Cross Volunteer?
What does the rule Mixed Quality do on the Tribesmen? What's the idea behind their cost? (normal cost for Regulars despite not having rifles, but the extra soldiers cost just 4 points?)
Spelling bee: "Spears of Hand Weapons" copy/pasted all over the place. ;)
Upgrading the Fiat 3000A to 3000B costs +305 points...
"They Came from Above": The 5-6 Ethiopian result talks about Italian troops?

Looks like great work!

I just finished reading the PDF - I really like it and truly appreciate the effort that both Mr Baxter and Jud put into the product. I've now got a use from some of the boxes of Perry Sudanese I have laying around!!!

Great job guys. What makes BA really worth it is the quality of the community of players that support the game - the new Armies of Ethiopia supplement is a testament to the quality of this group of gamers who make the game a real pleasure to participate in.

Thanks
Miles

If I had the graphical skills of Senor Baxter, I'd be on that like white on rice.

first view- looks awesome and we need more of this imagination and work in the hobby.

will look over in more detail later to see for any obvious corrections (though I don't know the period that well yet)

now to see what this inspires ? Korean War, roukes drift? Spanish civil war...will need to reaserch all (always been an ancients player previously)
but now somewhat keen to see what I can come up with?

excellent work
Ben

Thanks for making this!

What are the best books that cover this bit of the war? I have a couple books on Adowa but don't remember seeing a book that focuses on this.

Is there even a remote possibility of getting this list added to Easy Army?

Why haven't Warlord adopted this as an official pdf?

yeah it be cool if it was on easy army or if it was adopted, but i am also calling not it, even though it was my work and labor.

I used a variety of online resources when researching the conflict and could not give a recommendation on any books.

I was also wondering that. I think it's in the German book and that it's like "green" but there is a chance that the unit will upgrade all the way to Vet.

This is an awesome supplement - especially for an Italian player!

You may consider another special rule for the Abyssinians using Dum-Dum rounds. Increased lethality may help balance out the rarity of rifles.

You may also give the Tribesmen a limited AT capability. Since the Italians relied on the tiny CV33 tankette, a common tactic was to rush them at the sides and rear and shove their spears through the vision slits, lever off the tracks, or even flip them upside down!

After reading through a few of the surprising number of books that do cover the invasion of Ethiopian and the East Africa campaign, I have just a few ideas that might be nice if added to this list in some way.

First I don't see a way to include the Sudanese Defense Force that were the hard core of the Gideon Force. Everyone involved seemed to be quite impressed with these soldiers (unlike the Patriots, which got mixed reviews at best) and accounts of their fighting feature a lot of light machine guns and sneaking up to forts to throw grenades. I don't think that allowing them as Commandos at least in the East Africa campaign selector would be very wrong.

Secondly, the feudal nature of most of the Ethiopian army led to a large number of cases of Ethiopian troops leaving the battlefield once their leader was killed or wounded badly enough to need evacuations. Apparently the custom was for a leader's troops to escort the body back home for burial. Seems like the kind of thing that could make a good, distinctive Army Special Rule but I'm not sure would be interesting and easy to work in.

Again, I want to thank you for all this work. I especially think that using the Green and Mixed Quality rules captures how the Ethiopians might be willing to suffer very high casualties but at the same time uncertain loyalty and old fashioned ideas about warfare made them less than reliable.
