Hi all,

I really haven't played much BA, but have been enjoying version 2. my last tournament was at least four years ago, but am planning to play this year at Fall-in. I am really not 'up' on the meta, and am not planning to win or anything, but would love to come with a reasonably well-balanced and competitive list. Here is what I am considering:

HQ:
Reg 1st LT with one man, SMG armed. 85 pts

1st squad:
Reg 12 infantry, NCO with SMG and 1 BAR- 128 pts

2nd squad:
Reg 12 infantry, NCO with SMG and 1 BAR- 128 pts

3rd squad:
Reg 8 infantry, NCO with SMG and 1 BAR- 88 pts

Support:
Reg Medium Mortar team- 50 pts
Vet sniper team- 65 pts
Reg bazooka team- 60 pts
Reg M4 Sherman- 195 points

TOTAL: 799 points, 8 order dice.

any suggestions or thoughts?

Best,
GMB

I like it. The big squads will do well in the shorter ranges, get the mortar a spotter.

Can you get another BAR in those squads?

I would possibly drop the bazooka and a body or two and get two .30 cals

I like the list, big fan of the amount of infantry you have there. I also second the motion of dropping the bazooka, at 800 the sherman should be pretty adequate anti-tank. Using the points saved there I would take a MMG and spotter for your mortar. Normally I wouldn't even suggest the MMG and instead bump up the number of guys in your third squad, but keeping the order dice is valuable.

Hey guys-- Thanks for the feedback! I went ahead and dropped the bazooka, added an MMG team as well as the spotter. clocks in a 799 points, 8 order dice...

So, my tournament experience at Fall-In was great! There were 24 players, and a couple of people on the 'wait list', so great turn out.

I played the list above, swapping out a mmg and spotter for the bazooka. I am really pleased with how my list performed, and had a ton of fun. I ended up 6th place overall, which surprised the heck out of me. I played against German lists in all 3 games, and had 3 great opponents. I'm doing this from memory, but I think this is what each game looked like:

Game 1: I played against a 8-dice German list, and I believe the scenario was "key positions" with 3 objectives.

-HQ Lieutenant
- Medic
- 2 veteran Pioneer squads with LMG's and flamethrowers.
- Regular Motorcycle troops
- a MMG team
- an AT Rifle team
- SdKfz 222 armored car

Round one, I successfully dropped a mortar round on his MMG team, wiping it out, then my sniper took out his medic. Being down 2 order dice really put him on the back foot the rest of the game, although his 222 managed to wipe out one of my big infantry squads, which were in a building covering an objective. HE vs buildings is rough! In the end, I wiped out all 3 of his infantry squads, with only losing one order die so a solid victory to me.

Game 2: another 8-die German list, this was meeting engagement (scenario 1). the list looked something like this:

HQ, one officer no troops
Sniper team
2 Veteran infantry squads with LMG's
1 regular infantry squad with LMG
light howitzer and spotter
Panzerscreck team (regular)
Hanomag "drill" with triple auto-cannons- OUCH!

This was annihilation on a dense board, and I started by hanging back Early game, my mortar was once more a rock star dropping a round on his light howitzer. It never got a shot off, although took me four rounds to wipe out. His Hanomag pushed up my left flank, chewing up infantry, while my Sherman circled around on the right. I gained an advantage when I was able to snipe his commander, take out his Panzershreck team, and assault a veteran squad with infantry that had flanked the previous turn. Another solid win to me, the only thing I ended up losing was the sniper team.... I think.

Game 3- 8 Dice Falschirjaegers- A very challenging list! we played the 'sectors' scenario, where you have to push into all 4 quadrants.

- HQ lieutenant and trooper.
- 3 veteran, stubborn squads with LMG's
- 1 veteran stubborn assault squad with SMG's and 2 panzerfausts
- Sniper team
- Light Howitzer
- Sdkfz 222 with auto-cannon.

This was a really challenging game- he flanked with 2 squads and the 222, while I held the center of the board with my infantry. He quickly chewed up one of my big infantry squads (again, with an auto-cannon!), while I quickly eliminated his howitzer. In the end, he was able to push 3 of his units into my sector, while I lost a critical assault against a decimated veteran squad which cost me the game.

Some overall observations:

- I found my list to be solid, no gimmicks, and flexible enough to deal with a lot of situations. I really liked my big 12-man squads.
- My Sherman was a real threat, although I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with the main gun. In 3 games it took 3 panzerfaust shots and 1 'sreck, but they all missed.
- My mortar was the star of the show! I certainly got lucky, but it made more than it's points back in every single game. The spotter IS a must.
- My sniper was extremely useful, and was effective at eliminating units every game.
- Veteran infantry is tough to crack! Especially stubborn vets. and, Germans with LMG's are just scary.
- auto-cannons... wow! I learned a painful lesson as to just how dangerous they are. especially the triple mounted on the hanomag.

Overall, I'm hooked! Looking forward to finding more regional events, and am working on a soviet list...

Best,
GMB

I had an awesome Fall In! experience too - I was the guy with the French army and the big tank. I ended up with two losses and a draw in my final game, but the last one, against a force of U.S. Rangers was one of the best games I've played in a very long time.

I hadn't played Bolt Action for a couple of years, but this tournament certainly got me hooked again too. Can't wait to play again at Cold Wars! Now, what force to bring...
