Endgame in Oakland, California held a big SAGA Demo day on February 2. The turn out was very good with around a dozen players, both those with their own armies and those who were curious but haven't had a chance to try the game. The level of interest was very encouraging, as the general reaction to the game was "never heard of it" only a few months ago. This is also a very positive sign for the hobby in general, as historical miniature gaming was largely limited to Flames of War not very long ago. Now, a number of lesser known historicals are generating interest.

Endgame's web site is here: http://www.endgameoakland.com/

The store is well stocked and has a large loft area with a couple of dozen gaming tables. About half of the gaming space is dedicated miniatures tables with plenty of terrain, the rest is for RPGs and board games. I recommend visiting if any of you are ever in the area.

Here are some photos from the event:

Scots formed up for battle

The scenario's the challenge. The "Normans" are actually Rohan riders from GW's LOTR range.

On another table, Vikings fight Normans

A new player used my own Scots against me, but I got a chance to try Normans. Here a unit of Knights just Galloped and ran down a lone surviving Scots Thane, who fled after the rest of his unit was decimated by levy bowmen. For some reason, the peasants were murdering their betters in droves on that day, and more models fell to levy than I have ever seen.

A warlord and his lieutenant, or is it the other way around?

A good time had by all

This looked great. Demo is a good way to get interest with zero outlay. Great looking tables and models. Thx for the post.

Now we just need more new sagaconvertmites to get posting up here! :)

As a side note: I previously complained about the lack of aesthetics of setting up the table following the rules in the back of the SAGA rulebook, but I was concerned about whether having "natural" boards will affect game balance.

We used "natural" boards that were set up by the even organizer before hand. I think with the exception of one table where the Irish proved to be a major nuisance. Even then it was not game breaking. Overall, the terrain did not affect game balance in any significant way.

More of an issue were some of the wackiness from some of the scenarios.

I was worried about the use of scenery too. Some factions like Welsh rely on it to get advantage from say, uneven/slow terrain. If a board doesn't have the right kind of terrain it can help screw up an army. Its a bit liek the old Wood Elves in WFB, no woods, no elves (left after turn 3). It certainly adds a layer of toughness to run an army that depends on certain terrain when you are not the one setting up the board to favour yourself!

The missions all look interesting. Having only tried the basic kill-the-warlord mission, I can't say yet. I have some carts to build...
