There's also the 28mm Hät Industries hard plastic figures. While the details may not be directly comparable to Gripping Beast, they are very affordable. I mean 32 figures for less than 10 pounds cheep.

Also, I've seen these in the flesh and the paint jobs on the website don't really do them justice since they are painted in an "old school" technique and don't use drybrush and washes to bring out the details.

Affordable yes. Would I use them myself, no. I have a pack of the HAT Spanish infantry and find them too small next to the GB figures and lacking in sculpt detail. If you have all HAT models to game with/against then "maybe".

Norman plastics with bits from other sets are good place to start, I've made few myself. Possibly levies / foot warriors from GB's plastic dark age warriors?
