Oil wash help -- stripped paint underneath

Hey all,

I just tried using oil washes for the first time and screwed it up pretty badly. The mineral spirits I used ate through the wash, varnish, and base coat. I have no idea where I want wrong though.

My steps:

1) Base + Prime
2) Krylon clear coat (it cured overnight)
3) Mig dark brown wash applied over entire model and let dry for a while
4) Gamsol odorless mineral spirits to clean off the excess

The cleanup step ended up taking away far more than I thought it would.

Any idea what went wrong? Does Gamsol not work with acrylics? Not enough gloss cote? To vigorous clean up?

Here is a pic of the end result... thankfully I was practicing on a throwaway Zvezda model.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

It is the gamsol I am 99% sure. Not all thinners and mineral spirits are created equal. I had the same problem when my local art store claimed their odourless thinner was the exact same as white spirits.

Mineral spirits are stronger in general than white spirits.

This is what I use after the thinner disaster never had a problem.

Either the spirits is to strong, or your clear coat was to weak.

You would get better results with Windsor and Newton Peat Brown Artist Ink for a wash. I have been using that for 20+ years and have never had any issues. 100% consistent and I get the exact same results every single time I use it.
